Charles Southard
Born: 1794; Orange County, North Carolina
Died: 1857; Hickory County, Missouri
Father: John Southard
Mother: Dorothy Gilliam
Charles was the fourth of nine children born unto John and Dorothy Southard. He lived his childhood in Orange County, North Carolina and eventually married Esther Rhodes of Guilford County in March of 1818.
Within the next several years, he and Esther moved to White County, Tennessee with Charles' brothers Maclin and Carter.
In 1843, Charles, Maclin and Gilliam, with their families, left their home of Tennessee and headed towards Missouri, via ox cart. Being farmers, the lure of inexpensive, fertile farmland was too enticing to the families. Maclin settled in Dallas County while Charles went on to settle in neighboring Benton County. Their brother Gilliam settled in Maries County.
All of Charles and Esther's children were born in Tennessee except for the youngest as Susan was born in Benton County in 1839.
Eventually Charles and Esther relocated to neighboring Hickory County, which is where they were laid to rest.
