Excluding about twenty years of which he resided in White County, Tennessee, Carter Southard lived most of his life in North Carolina.  He sired seven children with three wives.  We do not know the reasons for the wives' deaths.

Carter and his older brother, James McKay, were to inherit the deed to their father's farm if anything should happen to their older brother John.  John appears to have had some sort of infirmity, preventing him from living a well-structured life.  We read this in their father's Last Will & Testament.
