Moses Southard
Born: 1821; Lawrence County, Tennessee
Died: 1866 or 1869; Arkansas / Missouri
Father: Charles Southard
Mother: Esther Rhodes
Moses was the first of six children born unto Charles and Esther Rhodes Southard. It was recorded that he was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee, but there doesn't appear to be any evidence that his parents ever lived in that county.
Moses was about seventeen years of age when his parents, along with his uncle Maclin, left with the Breshears family for a new life in Missouri. Maclin's family settled in Dallas County while Charles' household continued on to Benton County with the Breshears clan. It was in Benton County that Moses married Louisa Breshears about 1848. In due time, Moses and Louisa were blessed with six children as were Moses' parents. They had a pleasant life in what was known as Breshears' Valley.
About 1860, the family relocated to Arkansas for reasons unknown. Louisa died a short time later; again, the reason is unknown. With six children to care for, Moses quickly remarried. The Southard family then decided to move back to Missouri when, unfortunately, Moses passed away while enroute. He was buried in an unmarked grave somewhere near the Missouri/Arkansas border.
Moses' second wife, name unknown, decided to return to Arkansas leaving the children to find their way back to Breshears' Valley. Eventually the children did reach their destination, though in ragged clothing and half starved. According to the 1870 Federal Census, two of the children were living with their uncle, James H. Breshears. The others were undoubtedly staying with relatives or were old enough to be on their own.
