Daniel was the third of six children born unto Charles and Esther Rhodes Southard.   

He was born in North Carolina but was relocated to White County, Tennessee with his family soon after his birth.  Also living in White County at this time were his uncle Maclin and family.  Daniel R. Southard is often times confused with his cousin Daniel, the son of Carter Southard.

In 1838, when Daniel was about five years of age, Charles and Maclin, along with their families, left Tennessee and headed for a new life in Missouri with the Breshears family.  Maclin's family settled in Dallas County while Charles' household continued on to Benton County with the Breshears clan.
